Art Day 2005 Mail Art Call:

Art in the Streets

The theme for the Art Day 2005 mail art call was "Art in the Streets." These 18 entries were diverse and fabulous.

The art was received in Houston, Texas, and scanned. Then, it was forwarded to Los Angeles, Calfornia, and from there it was placed on public display as part of a large Art Day celebration in nearby Glendale.

This page features clickable thumbnails of the art, including the front, back, and enclosures where appropriate. If the return address was clearly part of the art, it is displayed. If I wasn't certain, I omitted it or blurred it.

On the individual pages, each larger image is linked to a (sometimes huge) full-size scan.

Did you know...

Art Day was started in 1998 by Becky Mate, an artist, writer, and member of Artists for a Better World.

She said, "It is through the arts that we pass on the important parts of our culture such as beauty, honesty, spirituality, vision and heroism."

Since then, the holiday has been adopted by many artists from diverse backgrounds, worldwide.

Art Day is celebrated annually on the second Friday in August.

Mail Art--also spelled "mailart"--is any art that is sent through the mail, usually traditional postal mail. In most cases, everyone who handles the mail will be able to see it.

In other words, the art is primarily on the outside of the envelope or post card. In some cases, the art may be inside, and visible through a window or transparent area on the envelope.

A mail art call is an open invitation to submit art. Sometimes, the art is displayed at a gallery, museum, or other exhibit venue.

In other cases, it may be scanned or photographed and displayed online.

Documentation is sometimes provided by the host of the mail art call.

This can be a list of participants, with their contact info, sent by mail to everyone who sent art. Or, it can be an online list with similar information.

If your name and/or address appear on the outside of the art, it's assumed that it's okay to include that in the documentation.

If the name and/or address appear only inside the mailing, the host uses discretion when compiling the documentation.

There are no rules to mail art.

Even if the mail art call specifies themes, sizes, colors, etc., the host can and should expect absolutely anything.

In many cases, all art received is displayed, regardless of the specifications.

Mailart (aka mail art) is art sent through the mail, usually via the postal service. It's generally seen by everyone who handles the mail, en route.
Artistamps are faux postage. They look like 'real' postage stamps, but they're actually created by artists, and often aren't legal postage.
